Food Council

What is a Food Council?

A food council is typically a group of community members, organizations, churches and local government that come together to address food-related issues in their area.

Food policy can be big, like national rules about food labels- or very local, like zoning laws that allow neighborhoods to support community gardens. Even though these policies shape our food system, most people don’t get many chances to influence them.

Food councils change that by bringing community members together to have a real voice in shaping food systems that reflect our shared values

The Asheville-Buncombe Food Council (ABFC) is a group of Buncombe County residents working to strengthen the local food system through policy, programs, and education!

We bring together neighbors, organizations, and local leaders to shape our community through projects and policies; no policy background required!

We have a general council meeting, a projects committee, and a policy committee- all meet virtually, once a month! Join us to learn, share your voice, and help create change!

Join a Committee!

Projects: We meet virtually the second Wednesday of every month at 6pm! Click here to join this meeting. This group focuses on the wider Buncombe area to ensure there is equitable distribution of resources. Whether its building food pantries, partnering with rural communities, or supporting small farms and food hubs- this group has a place for you1

Policy: We meet virtually the first Thursday of every month at 6pm! Click here to join this meeting. This group tackles everything policy related- talking with neighbors about why equal food access matters, gathering petition signatures, communicating with city staff, researching how the policy could work in practice, etc! No policy experience needed- just show up with curiosity and care for your community!

General Council: We meet virtually the third Wednesday of every month at 10am! Click here to join this meeting.
